Colour is a very important characteristic of any gemstone and it is one of the key factors to be considered when determining the value of a diamond. A very precise scale of colour grading is in general use today in the diamond trade. The grades are distinguished by letters of the alphabet, beginning with the letter D which denotes a completely colourless stone, with each diamond becoming progressively more yellow as one moves down the scale.
