A diamond’s final configuration must be calculated before it can be cut and polished.

Some rough diamonds are first sawn into two parts. The Marker will decide which stones need to be sawn, where they will be sawn & what shape the stone will end up being.

Before the advent of computer technology, the marker would have to determine where the stone was to be sawn with the aid of magnification and a highly trained eye. Today sophisticated computer technology creates a 3-dimensional image of the rough diamond. With the help of this computer equipment and his/her trained eye, the marker will determine where the stone is to be sawn. With the aid of laser technology, a line is etched on the surface of the diamond in the exact place it is to be sawn.
